How to Create a Home Inventory Checklist

It’s extremely important for you to keep an updated inventory of all of the items within your home. Otherwise, if you need to make a claim against your homeowners insurance policy, you won’t be able to give your insurance company an accurate list of the items that you have lost.

When creating a home inventory, you’ll want to take stock of any item within your home that you would need to replace in the event of damage or theft. You should include a detailed description, any serial numbers available and the amount you purchased the item for.

As you purchase new items, you’ll want to get into the habit of always entering them into your list. There are also mobile applications and software programs that you can use to list your items. Some of these programs will even let you scan the barcodes on your items so that it can automatically fill out the information. Other programs will let you take a photograph of your item for more information. Either way, the most important thing is that you maintain a current and accurate list.
