February 2 is Groundhog Day, when he allegedly emerges from his burrow and predicts how soon winter will end by virtue of whether he sees his own shadow or not. It's a fun story, made even more popular by the 1993 film, Groundhog Day. But is Punxsutawney Phil the only character who predicts seasonal changes? Nope. There are others. Meet the bear and the caterpillar. The bear A quite similar tradition in Serbia has it that on February 15, the hibernating bear will awaken and emerge from her den. As she makes her way sleepily out of winter cold storage, if she sees her shadow in her groggy condition she, too, will become frightened and return to slumber for another 40 days before spring arrives. The caterpillar There is also the wooly bear caterpillar, which is the larval form of the Isabella tiger moth. Before winter begins, this black and brown caterpillar is said to predict the severity of the winter by the number of rust-colored segments in the center of the animal's body. The more brownish segments, the milder the coming winter is supposed to be. Luckily, protecting your financial assets is far more predictable than the weather, and Weeks & Associates has a far better record in doing their job than any of these seasonal prognosticators.
