There are 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed each year, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Since May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a refresher in skin protection will help you have fun in the sun safely. Apply Sunscreen Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 every day. Skin cancer is caused by ultra violet rays from the sun, which are present even on cloudy days. When applying sunscreen don't forget the ears, the back of the neck and the tops of feet. Those that swim or stay outdoors all day should reapply sunscreen every two hours. Cover Up In addition to sunscreen, stay out of the sun between the peak hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. If you must go outdoors, stay in shady areas and wear clothing that covers all of your skin. A lightweight long sleeve shirt and broad brimmed hat will shield most of the sun's rays while keeping you cool. Opt for dark colored clothing, which provides more sun protection than lighter colored clothing. Put on a pair of UVA/UVB blocking sunglasses as well, opting for a wrap around version for complete protection.
