Clean hands are healthy hands.

Wash your hands often, especially during cold and flu season. You touch so many surfaces all day long from phones, to doorknobs, to keyboards, and sink faucets. Touching surfaces that other people have touched will increase your risk of picking up a virus. Washing your hands can significantly reduce the spread of germs. Make sure to use warm, soapy water and wash vigorously. Make sure to get between your fingers and under your nails. Running short on soap and water? You can use hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol content instead.

Avoid the crowds.

Confined spaces are a perfect storm for spreading the flu virus. A simple cough or sneeze can spray the virus in droplets that can reach as far as six feet away. Always cover your cough—with the inside of your elbow—and be sure to stay away from infected people.
