Organize for National Preparedness Month: September

Celebrate National Preparedness Month by staying on top of all safety precautions!

September is the month to prepare your home, pets, car, and documents in order. Be sure to get covered and prepare for an emergency in all aspects. In California, wild fires are frequent, tornadoes and hurricanes are possible, earthquakes are likely, and power outages are expected!

These five steps are important for everyone, no matter where you live or what unforeseen hazards you may face.

  • Replenish your emergency kit
Each home and car should be stocked with emergency supplies to include, drinking water, snacks, a flashlight, blanket, first-aid kit and a towel. We know it doesn’t quite snow over, but black ice can be possible, so it’s always worth adding an ice-scraper, and chains just in case! Now is the time to refresh the water, check the expiry dates on the snacks, and the batteries in the flashlight.
  • Have your pets vaccinated and micro-chipped
In natural disasters, pets can get separated from their owners. To protect them, make it easier to reunite with them if you have lost them. Make sure that their IDs and vaccinations are up to date.
  • Get your car ready for winter
While it may be warm weather now, it will cool off in the upcoming months. You can prepare your car before the cooler weather hits, by checking the tire pressure, changing the oil, replacing the wiper blades, making sure that your belts and hoses are in good condition, and that you have enough antifreeze. You can also wax your car to protect it from the elements.
  • Check home-safety features
Review your home to ensure that it is fitted with the top safety features. Burglars love long, dark nights in the winter, so make sure that you install that deadbolt on the backdoor, and install a burglar and smoke alarm. Keep a flashlight, gas stove, and plenty of water on hand in case an emergency happens.
  • Review your insurance coverage
If you had added any big purchases or gotten any expensive gifts lately, or updated the house or yard, or even added a feature or two to your car, you may need to inform your homeowners, renters, and auto insurance policy so that you receive adequate coverage. If you don’t have an inventory of your household items, now is the time to do one!
